Accessible parking spaces need to be easy to find and the right size, with access aisles that stay clear. Faded symbols and aisle hatching make it easier for other drivers to block them.

We mark accessible spaces, access aisles and symbols for commercial properties across Houston. Because accessible parking is governed by federal and Texas standards, the layout is reviewed against those requirements before any paint goes down.

How accessible parking is laid out

  1. Count and locate

We check how many accessible and van-accessible spaces the lot needs and where they should be relative to entrances.

  2. Review the layout

Space widths, access aisles, slopes and accessible routes are reviewed against the applicable standards.

  3. Coordinate signage

Required signs are identified so markings and signs work together.

  4. Stripe and stencil

Spaces, aisles and symbols are painted to the agreed layout.

What affects the cost

Every property is different, so pricing is based on a site-specific estimate. The main factors are:

  • Number of accessible and van-accessible spaces
  • Whether spaces are refreshed or relocated
  • Blue background painting versus outline-only symbols
  • Surface condition and slope considerations
  • Coordination with signs and the rest of the restriping

Accessible parking standards in Texas

Commercial properties in Texas generally follow the federal ADA Standards for Accessible Design and the Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS), administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. These cover the number of accessible spaces, their size, access aisles, signs and accessible routes.

As a reference point, the federal standards call for at least one accessible space for lots with 1 to 25 spaces, two for 26 to 50, three for 51 to 75 and four for 76 to 100, with at least one in every six accessible spaces being van-accessible. Your property's exact requirements should be confirmed for your site.

Accessible Parking Striping questions

Do accessible spaces have to be painted blue?

Blue backgrounds are common but the key requirements are the space size, access aisle, symbol and signage. We'll lay out the markings to match the applicable standards and your preference.

What is a van-accessible space?

A space with a wider access aisle (or a wider space) and enough vertical clearance for a van with a side lift. At least one in six accessible spaces needs to be van-accessible.

Does restriping affect our accessible spaces?

It can. If the layout changes, accessible spaces and aisles should be reviewed so they still meet the requirements.
